Why JackMate is free, and how you can help keep it alive

About the project

I’m a researcher in audio and deep learning, and a professor of acoustics. I code every day: for research, for teaching, and for building things that don’t exist yet.

JackMate is one of those things.

In my lab, we run both Linux and macOS machines, and we use real-time interactions between Jack audio clients for complex experimental setups every day.

There’s a real paradox: on Linux, JACK tooling is rich and mature, but professional hardware support is often a headache. On macOS, it’s the opposite: hardware compatibility is excellent, the user experience is generally what Apple does best, yet no proper native tool exists to manage the Jack Audio Connection Kit at an advanced level.

JackMate is my contribution to fixing that imbalance. It’s a solo project, built in my spare time, free and open source. No company, no funding. A tool my lab colleagues and I needed, and that you might need too. It can also be a great entry point for discovering JACK on macOS if you’re new to it.

Why your support matters

JackMate is and will remain free. But distributing it properly has a recurring cost.

JackMate is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it installs cleanly, with no Gatekeeper warnings. That relies on a paid Apple Developer account ($99/year), an ongoing cost I cover so the app stays notarized for everyone.

A donation on Buy Me a Coffee directly contributes to:

  • Keeping the Apple Developer account ($99/year) that keeps JackMate notarized
  • Encouraging continued development of new features

No subscription, no paywall. If JackMate is useful to you, even a small contribution makes a difference.

Other ways to help

Even if you can’t donate, you can contribute to the project in other ways:

  • Star the repository on GitHub: it helps with visibility
  • Report bugs or suggest features via GitHub Issues
  • Share JackMate with musicians, audio engineers, or researchers who use JACK on macOS

Thank you for your support!
